Activities Along Payette River Scenic Byway

Stretching between Boise and the resort town of McCall, the Payette River Scenic Byway or Highway 55 follows the curves of the Payette River and nearby mountains. This approximately 2 ½ hour drive rewards you with breathtaking panoramas of the high desert plains that quickly turn lush with pine trees as you get further north, dropping into the rugged river. Part of this view can be enjoyed from a scenic train ride that starts in the small town of Horseshoe Bend.

Payette river is a source of many activities during the warmer months including white water rafting and kayaking with local river guides. Bring a tackle box and cast your line along at any point. Scattered campgrounds by the river are also popular.

The mountains however, offer activities just as exciting such as zip-lining down a beautiful Idaho valley and going 4-wheeling. During the cooler months, a handful of natural hot-springs-fed pools can be just the right treat. And last but not least, Idaho mountains also offer some great skiing and snowmobiling.
